Before video games, before home computers, before any of it, there were slot cars. Scalextric, Aurora, Tyco, Cox — the manufacturers of the 1960s and 70s produced millions of electric race cars that ran on plastic tracks. The hobby died in the 1980s. The collector market is now quietly coming back.
The golden age
Between 1962 and 1977, slot car racing was a major hobby in the United States. Aurora produced the famous “Model Motoring” line, which featured 1/87 scale cars that ran on a figure-8 plastic track. Tyco had a similar line at a lower price point. Cox produced more sophisticated 1/32 scale cars.
By the late 1970s, the hobby had faded. The cars were intricate, the tracks were bulky, and kids had moved on to Atari. The companies either exited the category or pivoted.
What survived
The cars didn’t disappear. They ended up in basements, garages, and yard sales. Most were played with heavily — the cars took abuse from crashes, the track sections were stepped on, the controllers failed.
Surviving complete sets in original boxes are rare. A complete 1964 Aurora Model Motoring set with track, controller, and 4 cars can sell for $300–$800. A complete 1967 Aurora AFX set (the upgraded version) can clear $1,000.
The collector market
The slot car collector market is split into two camps: toy slot car collectors (who collect Aurora, Tyco, Cox as toys) and hobby slot car collectors (who collect 1/24 and 1/32 scale race cars as scale models).
The toy side has a smaller but more accessible market. Sets in original boxes with all accessories command consistent premiums.
The hobby side is dominated by the larger 1/32 scale cars. Cox, Scalextric, and Carrera all produced at this scale. A rare Cox 1/32 Lotus Formula 1 car from the late 1960s can sell for $400–$600.
Where to buy
eBay is the dominant marketplace. There’s also a healthy community of slot car racing clubs that buy, sell, and trade. The annual slot car show circuit includes events in California, New York, and the UK.
The play
If you’ve got a slot car set in the attic, check it carefully. Even damaged cars from the 1960s Aurora line have value — they can be restored. Complete sets with original boxes are where the value concentrates.
